Every piece of equipment listed below is gear I personally own and rely on in the field, or gear that has been thoroughly evaluated by me or a trusted colleague. I don't recommend gear based on specs on paper—only on real-world reliability, fast autofocus, and the rugged performance required to survive the tough shooting conditions I put my equipment through.
When stocking up for field work or upgrading my kit, I personally rely heavily on B&H Photo. Beyond carrying top-of-the-line equipment, their customer service is outstanding, their shipping is fast, and their Payboo card instantly reimburses the full sales tax right at checkout—saving you serious cash on cameras, glass, and big-ticket accessories.

Not all camera bodies are built the same! You might not need the blistering speed of 20 to 30 frames a second—but when an eagle dives, a rocket ignites, or a runner crosses the finish line, having that power at your fingertips changes everything.
Below are Nikon’s absolute best current-generation mirrorless workhorses (Z-Mount) along with one of the greatest, most legendary DSLRs ever built (F-Mount). Take a look through the lineup, and as always, if you need help figuring out which body fits your specific shooting style, shooting needs, or budget, just shoot me a text or drop me an email!

If you look in my gear bag, you’ll find that I primarily shoot with Tamron lenses—they’ve been absolute field-proven workhorses for my action and wildlife work. Over the years, however, a few of my favorite go-to Tamron models have been discontinued by the manufacturer. To make sure you have reliable, currently available gear options, I’ve included equivalent native Nikon lenses alongside my Tamron lineup. Whether you choose Tamron or Nikon, every option listed below delivers the sharp optics, fast autofocus, and rugged build quality needed to handle demanding field conditions.
Seamlessly mounts classic F-mount glass onto Z mirrorless bodies without losing autofocus speed, metering accuracy, or image stabilization capabilities. Check Price on B&H
Tamron's modern Z-mount replacement for the discontinued 150-600mm G2 F-mount lens you frequently see me using in the field. It packs serious telephoto reach into a handholdable, ultra-compact package with lightning-fast VXD autofocus tracking and reliable VC stabilization. Check Price on B&H
One of my favorite and go-to lenses, the ultimate event and action workhorse. Fast f/2 wide-open aperture on the short end gives incredible light-gathering ability and subject separation, replacing two standard zoom lenses in one body. Check Price on B&H

The premier native mirrorless reach for wildlife, birds, and long-range action. If you want that extra 100mm of reach on the long end and don't mind giving up a bit of focal length on the wide end compared to the 150-500mm, this is an outstanding option. Internal zooming keeps the balance perfectly stable on tripods or monopods, and built-in VR tracks fast subjects smoothly. Check Price on B&H
An absolute necessity and the go-to lens for action and sports photographers. S-Line optical excellence for mirrorless delivering edge-to-edge sharpness, blazingly fast focusing speed, and incredible VR performance in low-light field work. Check Price on B&H
The undisputed DSLR legend. Fluorite elements keep it light in the hands while delivering tack-sharp contrast, killer bokeh, and tough-as-nails field reliability. Check Price on B&H
A rock-solid support system is essential for tack-sharp telephoto shots, but carrying heavy gear into the field can drain your energy fast. That’s why I rely heavily on carbon fiber. Carbon fiber construction delivers incredible structural rigidity and dampens vibration far better than traditional aluminum—all while keeping your setup lightweight enough for long days of hiking, tracking wildlife, or shooting action on the sidelines.
(Note: Keep in mind that many higher-end tripods and monopods are sold as legs only and don't come with a head included! I've listed my go-to low-profile ball head at the end of this list below—it's easily one of the best, most dependable heads I've ever used in the field.)
My go-to heavy-duty tripod. Built with massive 10-layer carbon fiber legs for maximum rigidity and stability. I use this bad boy to shoot rock-steady 8-minute exposure rocket streak shots, making it an absolute beast in windy coastal environments or tough field conditions. Check Price on B&H
My travel-friendly, compact carbon fiber tripod. Delivers serious stability while folding down small enough to easily strap onto a gear bag for long treks in the field. Check Price on B&H
Ultra-lightweight 5-section carbon fiber monopod weighing just over a pound while supporting up to 26 lbs. Anti-rotation twist locks allow for instant deployment when tracking fast-moving action on foot. Check Price on B&H
Modular carbon fiber monopod featuring a quick foot-pedal base release for 360° fluid panning and tilt control—ideal for sports sidelines, action, and field tracking. Check Price on B&H
An extremely sturdy, low-center-of-gravity ball head engineered to handle heavy telephoto setups without creeping under load. Adding this 50mm head to both your tripod and monopod gives you maximum stability, smooth articulation, and fast level adjustments in the field. Check Price on B&H
Stop letting your best work sit trapped on a hard drive or on your phone! There is nothing quite like taking an image out of the digital world and proudly displaying a stunning, high-resolution piece of art on your wall. Taking control of your own wide-format printing gives you absolute mastery over color, contrast, and paper texture from edge to edge. Whether you're filling your home with gallery-grade display pieces, framing portfolio work, or handing framed prints to friends and family that will leave them speechless, printing your photos completes the entire creative journey.
Either of the high-performance printers below will turn your digital files into physical masterpieces that demand attention.

Check Price on B&H
A professional 13-inch dye-based photo printer designed for rich, vibrant colors and high-speed output. Utilizing an 8-color dye ink system, it excels at glossy and luster finishes, delivering gallery-grade color density and crisp detail for fine art prints and client proofing. Check Price on B&H
A great camera body and fast glass get you halfway there, but the right field accessories keep you shooting when conditions get tough. From rugged transport to essential maintenance tools, these are the workhorses that keep your rig protected, powered, and performing at its peak.
A Note About Memory Cards: Your gear setup is only as fast as its weakest link! You can buy the most advanced camera body on the market, but if you choke it with a cheap, slow memory card, you’ll be sitting there staring at a full buffer while the action passes you by. The memory cards listed below are what I run in my own kit because they deliver the blazing read and write speeds high-frame-rate shooting demands. Never skimp on your memory cards.
(Pro-tip: Always pack a roll of gaffer tape and a few clean microfiber cloths in your bag—two low-cost field savers I hand out to all my students!)
An absolute game-changer—and something you'll always see me in when I'm out in the field. It evenly distributes heavy camera bodies and long lenses across your torso, freeing up your hands while keeping your rig locked down and instantly accessible. If you're carrying two cameras on a shoot to avoid swapping lenses on the fly, this setup is completely indispensable. And, let's be honest: it looks pretty badass out in the field too! Check Price on B&H
My go-to heavy-duty rolling case that doubles as a backpack—and it’s sized just right for airline carry-on. It has enough room to hold my Z9 with the Tamron 150-600mm lens attached (hood reversed), two additional camera bodies with short lenses mounted, plus another extra lens. Absolutely essential for traveling with a full action rig. Check Price on B&H

Blazing-fast, pocket-sized external drive engineered for rapid field backups and mobile editing workflows on the go. Check Price on B&H
The ultimate high-speed smart trigger for split-second action. I use mine in the field for remote pad-side rocket launch captures and firing off instantaneous shots during lightning storms, sound-activated triggers, or laser-break setup traps. Check Price on B&H
Essential fill-light support for harsh outdoor backlighting, macro detail, or action coverage when natural ambient light drops. Check Price on B&H
